Endless Driver

This week, I began work on a new project. This project is a team project and must be completed as a part of a team. We must collaborate to create this game with students who are studying a different media. I will be collaborating with an audio student.

The game will ideally have a unique soundtrack, and could possibly have unique sound effects too.

Players will drive a truck/ute around a procedurally generated environment, similar to an endless runner. In the back of the vehicle will be cargo which is not restrained, and if the player is not careful, cargo will fall out. If all of the cargo is lost, the player loses.

Not only will players need to worry about their cargo, but they will have some sort of incentive so that they will not take their time. As time progresses, the land will begin to fall away behind the player. The game is over once the player loses their cargo or falls.

Currently, I have implemented some basic controls to the vehicle, allowing players to drive it around (acceleration/braking/reversing/steering). These are not all of the controls that I will implement. I also plan to implement some aerial controls so that the player has some chance of recovering their cargo or landing while they are in the air.

The wheels are connected by hinge joints allowing them to rotate only about a single axis (as wheels do). They are attached to other hinge joints which simulate suspension, causing the vehicle to bounce somewhat over rough terrain. The hinge joint on the front wheels rotates, allowing the player to use it to rotate the front wheels around another axis. This allows them to steer.

This project will give me some insight into collaborating with people who have different interests and unique skills.
